Thank you for coming to our school. You were a very positive influence for writing. Thank you for your gentle spirit with the students as well as your encouraging remarks to each one of them....Thanks again for making our first experience with an author a rich one.

I still think about your visit to South School last year. You generated such warmth. It felt like you were an old friend and colleague. You inspired us to be better writers, readers, and people!
Laura Rosenblum, 4th/5th grade teacher, South Elementary School, Des Plaines, IL

Joseph Battesto, Principal, St. Patrick School, St. Charles, IL
The children and faculty are still talking about the author who came to our school. You were a huge hit. You made a great impact with a lot of children. You should be very proud of it. Thank you for all your wisdom.

Reluctant writers share their work
The quality of the experience with our Author in Residence was beyond my highest expectations. Mr. Lehman had a very large impact on the culture of our school and on many of our children’s attitudes toward writing. I was highly impressed with the quality and quantity of writing our students generated in just a few days. After reading and hearing what our children produced, I could only think that I wished I could write as well as our young writers. When I saw some of our more reluctant writers waiting after school to share their work and to receive feedback from Mr. Lehman, I knew that something quite remarkable had occurred at our school. The teachers will carry this writing momentum into coming weeks with follow-up activities. I want to thank our PTO and parents for funding this outstanding event!

On behalf of the students and staff at Blair School, I want to thank you for the wonderful three days you spent with us! Your residency exceeded all of our expectations! I have listened closely the past few days, and have heard much praise for you and your work with our students. You have a special way of talking with students that immediately generates rapport. They loved your stories! You wondered how lasting your message about writing would be, and I can assure you that our students will long remember you and what you shared about writing and publishing. My Title I teacher and I were talking the day after you left. She was very excited because the way you took students through story writing exactly matched and reinforced what she had been doing with her 2nd grade students. The kids were saying, “That’s the way Mr. Lehman did it!”

Even the shyest participated
The children were enthralled with your storytelling style and use of slides taken directly from the storybooks. Your “create a story” segment was welcomed enthusias-tically by all students. Our youngest writers eagerly entered into creating characters, settings, and a problem and solution.
All teachers were happily surprised as we watched the fourth through sixth graders open up their imaginations and display their creative talents…What delightful ideas you helped them put together…Your warm manner and sensitive nature put even the shyest child at ease to participate and ask questions.
Pat Finn, teacher, Glendale Heights, IL Black Hawk Elementary School,
Our students learned a lot from you. A number of them stopped me to tell me that they were writing books and that they would soon show them to me. Some even began telling the story! Teachersone after anotherhave told me what a good program you presented. All of us were in awe of your ability to handle such a large, squirmy group.

Powerful nature of fine writing
It was so helpful for our K-5 students to understand the process an author goes through from initial idea to actual publication. By continually making the relationship between their own reading and writing, you helped them to understand the powerful nature of fine writing…The kindergarten teachers were thrilled with the oral story-telling you began with them. The final shared writing that they produced as a result of your visit was terrific.

Thank you for coming to our school. You have made me write more than I used to.
Now I write a lot of the time. It is fun to write. It was fun listening to your stories.

Mr. Lehman gave three presentations to 450 of our students last fall. He held them spell-bound. It was evident throughout that Mr. Lehman cares about children and relates well with them…He enhanced his presentation greatly through use of visuals, book signing, and a question/answer session…Our students gained a new respect for authors and an interest in the writing of books.
